Katanga Invaders Reported Returning to Angola Following Bukavu Withdrawal - The surprise invasion of Katanga last week by white mercenaries evidently collapsed of its own accord, not under the weight of any onslaught by the Congolese army. Reports that the invaders are leaving the Congo and returning to Portuguese Angola, coupled with the news of Col. Jean Schramme's withdrawal from Bukavu, could mean the end of the bloody and bizarre era of white mercenaries in the Congo. The invaders met little resistance as they swept into the Congo from Angola a week ago Wednesday and then suddenly pulled back. The quick moves in and out seem so illogical for an invasion that diplomats here believe it may not have been an invasion at all but a diversionary tactic. Under this theory, the mercenaries wanted to draw the attention of the Congolese army from Bukavu so Schramme and his men could withdraw from that eastern Congo town with comparative ease.
