Red Buttons is an engaging young comic who may soon become crippled by kindness. He is the fresh, young star of the season, but he has gathered a following which has become too quick to scream its approval too loud. Their laughter on his live show is tossed at him with little care or discrimination. Red winks; they laugh. He shuffles; they laugh. He turns, combs his hair, sticks out his tongue, puts his hands in his pockets, walks three feet or says hello; they laugh. If Red were to chant "Ho-ho" continuously for the 30 minutes, less commercials, of one show, they would be in stitches. But their laughter is not wholesome; it's the tittering of the hysteric. The comedian obviously has no way of judging the quality of his humor. He depends upon the adolescent guffaws that whirl in his ears...
