Congolese army officers tried valiantly and sometimes vainly in the past few days to hold back their own troops from beating whites, looting homes and firing wildly in Kisangani. This report came from several of the more than 300 refugees who arrived in Kinshasa Saturday aboard two Red Cross planes and a U.S. Air Force C-130 transport plane. Friedrich Engel, a German journalist stranded in Kisangani since July 5, told newsmen he believed 10 Europeans had been killed in the rampage of Congolese soldiers who entered the city after mercenaries fled Wednesday night.
