Rebellious Whites Take Full Control of Congo City, Show Power by Marching to Rwanda to Release Civilians - Rebellious white mercenary units took full control of the important eastern Congo city of Bukavu and served notice they would keep control until kidnaped Moise Tshombe, former Congo premier, is released and returned to Congo political life. The column of mercenaries demonstrated their control by marching to the Rwanda border and releasing the first of the more than 100 white civilians who had lived with them in the Congolese bush for the last month. The Congolese government radio had called these civilians hostages, but the civilians, as soon as they reached Rwanda, insisted that they had joined the mercenaries for their own protection.
